The Miz has no idea why CM Punk hates him so much

CM Punk is not a fan of The Miz. That much was made clear earlier this year when Punk told Miz to “go s*** a blood money covered d*** in Saudi Arabia”.

The Miz was asked about Punk’s beef with him on the 411 Wrestling Interviews Podcast, and he has no clue why Punk hates him so much:

“I have no idea, to be honest with you. I still to this day have no idea. To be honest, I thought we were friends. It’s just one of those things where you’re like, god man, I don’t know. I just don’t know. I really don’t. I wish I could answer any of the questions that you would have about that, but I honestly don’t know. I don’t get it. I don’t get him.”

It’s well known how much CM Punk felt he deserved to be in the main event of WrestleMania during his last few years in the company. Punk rose to main event status in the summer of 2011 after his pipebomb promo during the build to Money in the Bank 2011. Punk competed in two more WrestleMania events following that huge career moment, but the main event of WrestleMania in both 2012 and 2013 was The Rock vs. John Cena.

In Punk’s eyes, his only other chance to main event WrestleMania came in 2011, months before the famous pipebomb promo. But WWE went ahead with a main event match of John Cena vs. The Miz. WWE released a documentary on Punk in late 2012, where Punk himself argued that The Miz had no business being in the main event of WrestleMania in 2011.

Punk explained that it should have been an easy choice. You take the best good guy and the best bad guy, and you put them together in the main event of the biggest show of the year. There was no doubt in Punk’s eyes that he was the best bad guy in the company in the years leading up to that event, with both his Straight Edge Society gimmick in 2019-2010 as well as his brief tenure as leader of Nexus in 2011.

However, Miz doesn’t agree that Punk was the best bad guy in the company heading into WrestleMania 27:

“I didn’t have respect when I was WWE champion. I was the main event of WrestleMania for that matter. People were talking like I didn’t deserve to be in that spot...Let’s put it this way, there was no one that generated more heat, more bad guy oriented couldn’t-stand-you type of heat, if you will, than me, at that moment.”

Looking back on my own viewing experience, there’s no doubt that Punk should have been the top heel in WWE at that time. But WWE completely botched Punk’s Straight Edge Society gimmick with a year of consistent losing from late 2009 to late 2010. Miz was chosen for the main event of WrestleMania 27, and it turned out to be one of the worst WrestleMania main events in history. The card as a whole was a dud, with Punk’s match against Randy Orton being one of the few good matches on the card.

All that being said, there’s no reason for Punk to hold a grudge against Miz for any of that, unless he is aware of backstage politicking that we are not. Punk’s slip down the card at the time falls directly on the hands of WWE creative and Vince McMahon. Of course Miz was going to run with the opportunity to headline WrestleMania once it was given to him.

The only potential bad blood that anybody can find between Miz and Punk is Punk’s frustration over Miz being chosen to main event WrestleMania 27, so that’s why it’s brought up here. But it’s also important to note that we have no idea if Punk does actually hold a grudge with Miz over that. Miz is a great ambassador for WWE, so maybe there was an interview earlier this year where he glorified WWE for their upcoming trip to Saudi Arabia, and Punk didn’t react well to it.

The point is, until Punk explains why he doesn’t like Miz, we’re left in the same boat as Miz trying to make a best guess to explain the situation. It’s human nature to identify patterns that don’t exist, and to find reasons to incorrectly explain away randomness. Who knows, maybe Punk is the sort of person who just occasionally tells someone to “go s*** a blood money covered d*** in Saudi Arabia”.
